AI in Clinical Diagnosis: Five Considerations for Reducing Risk

National AI Day on July 16 is a timely reminder that artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing clinical diagnosis. AI may help clinicians identify risks earlier, detect patterns, and support decision-making—but it also introduces new questions about reliability, documentation, accountability, and patient safety. Here are five data-based considerations to help you reduce AI-related medical malpractice risk.  
  1. Use AI to support—not replace—clinical judgment. AI-generated recommendations should be considered one input among many, alongside the patient’s history, exam findings, diagnostic testing, and clinician expertise.
  2. Understand the limits of the tool and its data. AI performance depends on the quality, representativeness, and clinical relevance of the data used to train and validate it. Clinicians should know when a tool is appropriate—and when its output may be unreliable.
  3. Document when AI informs a diagnosis or care decision. When AI contributes to clinical reasoning, documentation should clearly note how the recommendation was used and why the final decision was made.
  4. Stay current on training and appropriate use. As AI tools evolve, clinicians need practical education on their capabilities, limitations, and approved use within their organization.
  5. Support clear governance for AI in clinical settings. Strong policies, vendor review, and defined responsibilities can help reduce uncertainty about how AI tools are selected, monitored, and used in patient care.

For physicians, the key is not whether AI will be part of care delivery, but how it can be used thoughtfully, transparently, and safely. These five considerations can help reduce diagnostic risk while preserving the clinician’s central role in patient care.
