5 Recommended Steps for Prevention and Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer
1. | Assess patients for colorectal cancer risk factors, particularly family history. |
2. | Stratify patient’s risk into one of three groups: average risk, moderate risk, and high risk*. |
3. | Offer appropriate screening modalities according to patient risk and preference. |
4. | Identify advantages and disadvantages of each screening modality. |
5. | Confirm that patient adequately completes required bowel cleanout. |

*The recent death of actor Chadwick Boseman, age 43, from late stage colon cancer reinforces the importance of these recommended steps, detailed in our decision support tool.
