CAMBRIDGE, MA, August 1, 2014 – The recent U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of top hospitals is an impressive list of medical institutions that demonstrate exceptional health care delivery. Boston was the only city in the U.S. with two hospitals in the top ten of the 2014–15 Honor Roll—Massachusetts General Hospital ranked #2 and Brigham and Women’s Hospital ranked #9. We are so proud of these noteworthy hospitals, both of which are CRICO-insured member organizations.

CRICO, a recognized leader in evidence-based risk management, is a group of companies owned by and serving the Harvard medical community, of which Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital are part. In addition to the CRICO member institutions, we are honored to work with many more institutions through CRICO Strategies, a division of CRICO that serves the national health care community. “We are pleased to see so many of our Comparative Benchmarking System (CBS) members recognized for national excellence. Among those on the U.S. News & World Report 2014 Honor Roll were Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, UCLA Medical Center, and UCSF Medical Center,” says Heather Riah, assistant vice president, CRICO Strategies.

Included in the top 10 hospitals recognized in the “Specialty Categories” were many that participate in CBS, including Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, Stanford Hospitals and Clinics, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Massachusetts General Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, McLean Hospital, UC San Diego Medical Center, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

For more than 30 years, CRICO has provided industry-leading medical professional liability coverage, claims management, and patient safety resources to its Harvard medical community using data-driven evidence from its malpractice claims to promote patient safety and minimize lawsuits. This proven, learn-from-our-mistakes approach has resulted in both lower premiums for CRICO members and favorable trends in their malpractice claims.

Participants of CBS have access actionable claims analysis data to help them improve patient safety. Richard Corder, MHA, FACHE, is assistant vice president of business development for CRICO Strategies and works to ensure CBS has a diverse member base—this provides a wealth of industry knowledge to CBS participants, from comparing analyses of claims data to sharing best practices. Says Corder, “We have created a community of peers that comprises physicians, health care leaders, healthcare systems, and malpractice insurance companies. The fact that we partner with nationally renowned institutions means that we, along with all our member organizations, are able to convene with them and learn from their successes.”

Says Riah, “We are honored to work with such a diverse group of leading institutions and we wish a heartfelt congratulations to all the organizations recognized for their hard work.”
