Communication failures may lead to patient harm, serious injury, or death. Looking at data from the CRICO Strategies national Comparative Benchmarking System (CBS), authors discuss some of the risks associated with miscommunication between providers as well as between providers and patients. Organizations that contribute their data to CBS are able to understand the magnitude of incurred financial losses and pinpoint what is driving those losses—in this study, communication failures.

    An NBC4 I-Team investigation has found that the medical devices used during many minimally invasive procedures can, in rare occasions, burn the internal organs and tissues of the patient. The team highlighted the work of a CRICO-funded program called FUSE, Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy®, which educates surgeons about the risks of electrical instruments in surgery and how to use them safely.
