COVID-19 Application Guide

Although there is no premium charged in situations where a provider is helping with the current crisis, an application is needed. To determine which of the three application and sets of rules apply, refer to the table below.

Application Required**
1. Physician Application (printed or digital application) should be completed by:
  • Physician retired from clinical practice who was never insured by CRICO
  • Physician retired from clinical practice and last medical malpractice carrier was NOT CRICO
  • Physician still practicing clinically but whose current medical malpractice insurance does not extend to work at your institution
  • Medical student entering residency program early*
  • Fellow entering fellowship program early*
*Premium charges apply for the term of the residency and fellowship programs.

2. Abbreviated application Retired Physician and Physician Returning to Clinical Practice Application
  • Retired Physician: Physician has retired from clinical practice and last medical malpractice insurance carrier was CRICO
  • Physician Returning to Clinical Practice: Physician whose last clinical work was for one or more CRICO members and last medical malpractice insurance carrier was CRICO
3. CNM Application should be completed by:
  • CNM retired from clinical practice who was never insured by CRICO
  • CNM retired from clinical practice and last medical malpractice carrier was NOT CRICO
  • CNM still practicing clinically but whose current medical malpractice insurance does not extend to work at your institution
  • CNMs returning to clinical practice from non-clinical practice or retirement who were last insured by CRICO*
  * While this type of CNM uses the CNM application, in this case only, no claims history report is needed.
** Consistent with our existing process, CRICO reserves the right decline physicians/CNMs for coverage.

 

Instructions for All (1, 2, and 3 above)

  1. Complete the application.
  2. Identify the coverage is related to COVID-19.
    Note: This ensures that no premium will be charged.
  3. Coverage will only extend to work at, or on behalf of, and at the request of, a CRICO member institution related to the COVID-19 crisis.

Claims History Requirements

  1. Physician Application
    • Submit ANY available claims history reports if the physician has practiced clinically in the last 10 years.
    • Note that CRICO may ask for supplemental information regarding any reported claims.
  2. Abbreviated Application
    • Claims history reports are not required for providers that qualify for the abbreviated application.
  3. CNM Application
    • Submit ANY available claims history reports if the CNM has practiced clinically in the last 10 years.
      Note that CRICO may ask for supplemental information regarding any reported claims.
    • Claims history reports are not required for Retired CNMs and CNMs returning to clinical practice whose last MPL insurance carrier was CRICO.
   

SPECIAL ELIGIBILITY PROVISION RELATED TO COVID-19 CRISIS

We will waive certain eligibility requirements for physicians and other clinicians who are being provided privileges for the exclusive purpose of assisting CRICO members to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Members must also comply with the following:

  • The staff must be enrolled/scheduled by the Human Resources department, or the appropriate Hospital Authority (e.g., Medical Staff Office)
  • Where standard procedure is to run checks, such efforts must be continued
  • Such temporary staff may only work in such roles as befits their level of competence or licenses and privileges as are granted and documented
  • Inter-state licenses are acceptable subject to state ordinance
  • Written declaration must be obtained of good standing and any outstanding legal issues, court imposed penalties and other items to support due diligence
