CRICO’s RFA Grant Program

It is a long-standing practice of CRICO’s to reinvest in our insured providers by inviting them to submit grant proposals through an annual Request for Applications (RFA) grant program. Broadly, this program supports the identification, evaluation, and implementation of patient safety solutions aligned with identified areas of medical malpractice risk.

Each August, CRICO announces its RFA opportunity and our Grants RFA Details page is updated. This program is open to all CRICO member organizations and clinicians and employees at these institutions may apply. The application process has several phases that are outlined below:

  • Early August: RFA announcement
  • Mid-September: Letters of Intent (LOI) are submitted. This is the  first phase, which includes a brief proposal, budget, and two letters of support
  • Early October: All LOIs are evaluated. Through this standardized review process, a percentage of applicants advance to the second phase and are asked to submit a full proposal
  • Mid-November: Full proposals are submitted and reviewed by subject matter experts from CRICO’s member organizations. In general, successful proposals include: objectives that are feasible within a two-year period and the proposed budget; proposed outcomes that have strong evidence to reduce MPL risk and improve patient safety; an effective measurement and sustainability plan; and project outcomes that are transferable to other CRICO members.

CRICO’s Grant Funding in Action

Past grant awards have developed interventions that have made a distinct impact on improving patient safety to include improvements is surgical safety, enhancements to patient electronic health records, and using artificial intelligence to augment diagnostic procedures.
