By using a 14-item trust scale created in part by using web survey input from knee, back, and hip surgery patients the researchers were able to create a shorter 5 item list. These two versions were then validated among the participants by using a shared decision-making process score. The shorter list of 5 items achieved an overall higher positive correlation with the shared decision making score, suggesting that this list is highly reliable to use with patients who underwent common orthopedic surgeries.
