Primary Care Patient Safety

This site contains information for all of us working to reduce risks that may impede safe and effective care in primary care settings. We encourage your questions, concerns, and ideas to help CRICO optimize the delivery and effectiveness of primary care.

Data Findings

Claims with general medicine defendants occur mostly in the outpatient setting, involve diagnostic allegations, and result in high-severity injuries:

  • contributing factors primarily relate to clinical judgment.
  • with regard to the CRICO Diagnostic Process of Care, claims relate to assessment, referrals and to a lesser extent, test result management.

CRICO has been working with subject matter experts in the CRICO community and developed six key safety principles in primary care.
