Prevent, Communicate, Document: Medical Malpractice Data Helps Us Manage Risk

Dr. Feldman writes how incorporating malpractice claims data into model of the three Ps: Prevent adverse events, Preclude lawsuits from being brought if an adverse event occurs, and Prevail in lawsuits that cannot be precluded, can help to reduce risk for clinicians. Data can be used to reveal trends among claims to educate clinicians in order to prevent adverse events, find the gaps in communication prevalent in claims in order to preclude lawsuits when an event occurs, and find common errors in documentation to help defend clinicians during a lawsuit. By following these steps with malpractice data, says Dr. Feldman, it is possible to learn how to better prevent the next claim from occurring.
