Bessie Manley Szum RN, MPA/HA, NE-BC, is the Director of Patient Safety for CRICO. Bessie has a wealth of clinical and patient safety expertise. In her role, Bessie and her team are responsible for partnering with the Harvard medical institutions and their affiliate’s to provide analytical and educational services, which promote safety initiatives that mitigate risk to enhance patient and staff safety in all environments of care.

Bessie is a recognized nurse leader, having been a Nursing Director at Massachusetts General Hospital for over 15 years and the Beth Israel Deaconess for over 18 years. Bessie has been a nurse for over 40 years with extensive experience in peri-operative, intensive care, ambulatory and inpatient nursing. Bessie’s experience includes implementation of various quality and patient safety initiatives, success in leading and motivating teams to implement change to enhance care at the bedside, and multidisciplinary and inter-professional collaborations to promote the coordination of standards of practice across numerous departments.
