SUMMARY:

In June, CBS national peers convened at the CRICO Strategies 2017 CBS Member Summit outside of Boston, MA. This day and a half convening focused entirely on maximizing the value of the CBS membership—CBS data and Learning Community. We explored the coding and analytical process, how each organization is using CBS data and the critical role of disseminating the analysis and learnings across your organization. Additional discussions included the role of assessments in understanding risk from both a clinical and business perspective, with an eye toward the needs of claims, underwriting and patient safety. The agenda provided exceptional learning opportunities with robust discussion, feedback and exchange of ideas. We thank each CBS member who was able to join us for this valuable learning and building opportunity.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Slides of our sessions are now available in the CBS Member-only Portal (you must be a CBS Member to access):

  • Next generation coding and taxonomy: In this session, Alexa McCray, PhD, HMS Professor of Medicine and renowned ontology and taxonomy specialist, summarized her assessment of the CBS coding and taxonomy processes, and shared recommendations for Taxonomy 2.0. Following her presentation we discussed in an open dialog with CBS Members how to increase our data opportunities through enhanced capture and coding.
  • The role of assessment in risk and patient safety: This session explored various types of risk assessments, including a case study from Liz Mort, MD, Senior Vice President Quality & Safety, MGH, and an open discussion of how your Patient Safety, Claims, and Underwriting teams can collaborate and benefit from the findings.
  • Data in action, from query to dissemination:
    • ANALYSIS—Starting with the kinds of questions that drive an analysis, Trish Lugtu of MMIC shared how they identify a focus for analysis, explore the use of CRIT and CBS, and then work through the data analysis process.
    • ADVANCED ANALYTICS—Gene Quinn, MD, HMS Fellow in Patient Safety and Quality, and Darrell Ranum, JD of The Doctors Company, shared their experience in applying regression models to CBS data, and demonstrated how it can enhance understanding of patient safety risks.
    • DISSEMINATION—Once an analysis is complete, the next step is to package it for presentation and education. In addition to a presentation on data visualization and web analytics, members shared examples of their reports and other dissemination efforts.
