FAQs About Grants

  • What is the CRICO/RMF Research Grant Program?

CRICO/RMF and its subsidiary, Healthcare Safety Research Institute (HSRI), award grants for research and demonstration projects aimed at achieving greater understanding of patient safety issues, their etiology, and potential interventions.

The funding of these grants comes from the Board of Directors of CRICO/RMF, the patient safety and medical malpractice company owned by and serving the Harvard medical community since 1976. This funding is a major part of CRICO/RMF's mission to provide a superior medical malpractice insurance program to our members, and to assist them in delivering the safest health care in the world.

  • Who is eligible to apply for CRICO/RMF's Research Grants?

Research grant applicants must be employees of an institution that is insured by the Controlled Risk Insurance Company (CRICO), and/or must receive their individual malpractice insurance through CRICO. Both physician and non-physician applicants are welcome to participate.

Applications will not be accepted from a principal investigator currently funded through the 2006 CRICO/RMF research grant cycle. Applications from investigators who were funded by CRICO/RMF in previous years are eligible on the condition that their proposed research is considered new.

  • How are Innovative Health IT Solutions Grant applications selected?

Applications will initially be screened by CRICO/RMF to ascertain eligibility and completeness, and, if applicable, to address technical issues related to study design. Each proposal which passes the initial screening process, will be reviewed by the CRICO/RMF Patient Safety Grant Review Board, which consists of experts in information technology, patient safety and research, as well as individuals who represent the mission of CRICO/RMF.

Finalists will be selected by the Review Board and notified by CRICO/RMF no later than May 12, 2008. All finalists must prepare and present a 10 minute presentation on June 2, 2008 during the Problem Solved? Symposium. The review board will evaluate each presentation and the grant recipient will be announced after the conclusion of the program.
