Physicians, organizations and their employees who are owned by or closely affiliated with a Controlled Risk Insurance Company (CRICO) shareholder may be offered coverage. To be eligible, an individual or entity has to meet both CRICO program criteria and be recommended by the sponsoring shareholder institution. In some instances a vote of the CRICO Board may be required to approve coverage.

Who is eligible for physician coverage?

Each physician covered under the malpractice insurance program must participate under the aegis of a sponsoring institution and meet the eligibility criteria as outlined in CRICO's Underwriting Manual.

In general, professional liability insurance is provided to:

  • physicians and dentists with an appointment of instructor or higher from Harvard Medical School who have a close practice affiliation with one or more participating institution;
  • employed physicians being paid an annual salary of $15,000 or more by an insured institution;
  • non-salaried physicians who conduct essentially all of their clinical practice and professional effort in relationship with one or more participating institution;
  • interns, residents, and fellows employed by a participating institution.

Each sponsoring institution and CRICO reserves the right to withhold or terminate coverage if, in its opinion, an individual does not meet acceptable eligibility or underwriting standards.

Can corporations be covered?

Provided at least 75 percent of physician members of the trust or corporation are insured under the program, professional trusts or corporations and their employees can be covered. A special application must be submitted to the sponsoring institution. General liability insurance is excluded, except where the activities of the corporation are conducted in a facility owned or controlled by a sponsoring institution.
