CME Credits

CRICO/RMF CME on-line courses are available at www.rmfcme.com

All courses have been reviewed and tested by Harvard-affiliated medical experts. CRICO-insured physicians will receive two AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM for successful completion of each module. Courses are designed to provide the fundamentals of patient safety and risk management and methods to increase the safety of the Harvard medical institutions’ patients and staff. They are also designed to meet the Massachusetts requirement for risk management study.

CEU Credits

CRICO/RMF has recently discontinued its online CEU website. We are, therefore, extending the opportunity to all CRICO-insured clinicians to participate in the on-line risk management courses available at our CME website: http://www.rmfcme.com. Nurses may personally convert their CME credits to CEU credits. Please visit the Board of Registration in Nursing website for more information on this common practice

Credits for CRICO/RMF Publications

The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine has approved Forum (quarterly electronic journal) and Resource (a bi-monthly audio-news program) as qualifying for the equivalent of Category 1 risk management credit. An annotated table of contents for the current issue of each publication is emailed to CRICO-insured physicians.

Individual Category 1 risk management credits may be earned as follows: 0.5 credit for either reading one issue of Forum or listening to one complete Resource audio program or podcast. These Category 1 risk management credits are based on self-reporting and are available to physicians licensed in Massachusetts only.

Risk Management Category 1 equivalency credits earned in this way are not considered to meet the criteria for AMA PRA Category 1 credit, and may not be applied toward the other credits that must be obtained during each Massachusetts biennial license renewal cycle. Excess credits earned by listening to Resource, or reading Forum may be applied toward the six Category 2 risk management that must be earned every two years.

Risk Management Requirements for Massachusetts Physicians

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine requires physician licensees to complete 100 hours of continuing medical education (CME) within the immediately preceding two years. Ten (10) hours of CME must be in the area of risk management.

Documentation of CME

Do not submit documentation of CME credits with your renewal form. Do keep your own records.

Board Regulations

Physicians are expected to be aware of the contents of the Board's regulations and must spend two hours reading the regulations. Study of the Patient Care Assessment (PCA) portion of the regulations (243 CMR 3.01-3.16) qualifies as risk management study. To obtain a copy of the Board's regulations, visit: http://www.state.ma.us/sec/spr/sprcat/agencies/243.htm for more information.

Risk Management Credits

You must accrue 10 credits of risk management study. Four credits must be in Category 1. The additional 6 credits may be in Category 1 or Category 2.

  • Category 1
Generally, Category 1 programs are sponsored or jointly sponsored by an institution or organization accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education (ACCME) to offer AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM for CME activities.
  • Category 2
Category 2 is generally self-study and non-accredited study.

Risk management study must include instruction in medical malpractice prevention and may include courses in medical ethics, quality assurance, medical-legal issues, patient relations, risk identification, patient safety, loss prevention, utilization review that directly relates to quality assurance, non-economic aspects of practice management, or courses designed to reduce the likelihood of medical malpractice.
