How to Improve Patient Handoffs

Breakdowns in communication can cost lives and dollars. Data from the CRICO Strategies national Comparative Benchmarking System (CBS) database was highlighted in this HealthLeader’s Media Analysis article, to support what it takes to create smooth patient handoffs.


HealthLeaders reported,  “A 2015 [benchmarking] study conducted by CRICO Strategies found that communication errors accounted for over 1,700 deaths and $1.7B in additional costs to the healthcare system.” The  data also revealed that “23,000 medical malpractice claims between 2009 and 2013, found communication problems were contributing factors in 7,149 cases (30%).”
