Telemedicine Briefing
During this crisis, we have communicated several changes to support members during the COVID-19 crisis. We have clarified coverage, created an abbreviated application, and eased requirements for physicians and certified nurse midwives (CNMs) returning to clinical practice.
New insurance policy riders have been approved by the CRICO Vermont board to ensure that medical malpractice coverage is available under our domestic and international medical professional liability (MPL) policies for physicians providing telemedicine services across state lines.
We also have implemented a solution for members who want to provide insurance to clinicians onboarded to help with the crisis who do not currently have insurance or insurance that would extend to such work. The CRICO Vermont board has approved new insurance policy riders to address this need and approved a recommendation to waive premium for all providers who join our member institutions exclusively to help respond to the COVID-19 crisis.
Finally, with the help of our medical staff offices, we have developed a set of frequently asked questions about coverage, privileges, and application requirements accessible below.
With the spread of COVID-19, many clinicians are turning to alternative solutions to deliver care safely. Telemedicine is one such solution. CRICO has compiled a list of FAQs along with suggested guidelines from reputable sources. Federal and state requirements related to telemedicine are evolving rapidly.
If you need further assistance, please email Melissa Kemp, Vice President CRICO Underwriting or call 617.450.6835.

Members are seeking help outside of our network of providers to fill critical clinical roles in their organizations. To address this need, new riders were created and approved by the CRICO Vermont board April 10. This allows CRICO to extend MPL coverage to providers who are issued emergency privileges at your organizations but do not have existing MPL coverage OR do not have coverage that extends to work at your organizations. We also have waived certain eligibility requirements to provide this coverage.
No premium will be charged for these providers. Coverage will only extend to work at or on behalf of and at the request of a CRICO member institution related to the COVID-19 crisis.
