Since office-based care—and office-based malpractice claims—began increasing in the late 1990s, CRICO/RMF has been conducting Office Practice Evaluations to give physicians and practice managers a tool for identifying potential risks and developing mitigating strategies. In the course of that work, CRICO/RMF has noted that a number of practices have developed reliable systems to support clinicians in their day-to-day work and provide safe patient care in a lower risk environment. CRICO/RMF’s goal is to help providers in office-based care settings implement or enhance systems to assist in providing safe care in a reliable manner. This web resource is a part of that effort. Effective and Exemplary Practices

As you will see, the same problem has often been successfully addressed in more ways than one. For that reason, this notebook often includes multiple Exemplary or Effective practice examples for a given area of concern. Each has proven to be helpful, but one may be more suitable for you particular situation. For the purposes of this document, CRICO/RMF has applied the following definitions:

check

Effective Practice: A system or process that effectively and efficiently closes a potential gap in the delivery of patient care. Such gaps may involve communication of information, or patient access.

star

Exemplary Practice: A solution to a potential care issue that suggests a proactive approach to problem solving. The development of one system may enhance delivery of care in more than one focus area.

The criteria for evaluating both Effective and Exemplary Practices include the following:

  • Efficient
  • Cost effective
  • Easily duplicated

Effective and Exemplary practices need not be electronic; paper-based solutions are frequently easier to initiate and within the reach of many practices. Adoption of any example practice should be tested for its effectiveness in your environment. These recommended practices and examples are not a substitute for clinical judgment.

To Recommend an Exemplary or Effective Practice

Those of you working within the health care system every day know best which practice ideas and techniques are most successful and practical in providing safe care in a lower risk environment. If you have, or know of, an Exemplary or Effective practice that should be included in this notebook, please contact the CRICO/RMF OPE department (617-679-1525).
