Based on the demand from CRICO-insured general surgeons and surgical oncologists, CRICO/RMF is offering a second opportunity to take the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) postgraduate course on Saturday, June 7, 2008.
The FLS program is a comprehensive, two-part cognitive and manual exam. The number of course seats is limited to 20; registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The Chiefs of Surgery and CRICO encourage general surgeons and surgical oncologists who have laparoscopic privileges to attend. Registration deadline is May 28, 2008.
The Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program was developed by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and supported by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The program offers the opportunity for general surgery attendings to demonstrate a level of competence in skills necessary to perform laparoscopic surgery. Recognizing the importance of this program, the surgical chiefs in the Harvard system have agreed to partner with CRICO to help launch and promote the FLS program.
The program consists of CD-ROM based multimedia didactic materials covering the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery such as techniques for safe entry into the peritoneal cavity, physiological changes associated with pneumoperitoneum, and appropriate use of energy sources. Upon completion of the didactic and manual skills training portion of the course, participants take a multiple-choice test and a hands-on skills test.
There are no fees involved, but registration is required. Upon successful completion of the program, a one-time patient safety incentive of $500 will be awarded to your department chief on your behalf. In addition, CME credits will be provided by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
