The renewal request is processed by the RN through EPIC and forwarded to the physician for authorization (the RN may authorize standard refills when appropriate). A copy of the prescription is then faxed to the pharmacy. The faxes are kept in a central location for a designated amount of time in case there is a pharmacy or patient inquiry.

Benefits: - Renewal requests are handled by appropriately skilled staff.
- A back up system is in place if the pharmacy does not receive prescription renewal, avoids rework.

Practice policy is for provider to discuss medication renewals with patient during regularly scheduled three-month exams.

- Decreases medication telephone requests.
