Colorectal Cancer Screening Algorithm

Algorithm Formats: Choose Flash Movie (.swf) or Brochure (.pdf)

Colorectal cancer is the second most common type of cancer cited in malpractice claims naming CRICO-insured physicians. To address the risk issues, CRICO/RMF convened an advisory group of primary care providers and gastroenterologists to develop a Colorectal Cancer Screening Algorithm. As a decision support tool, the Algorithm is designed to help primary care providers:

  • Assess patients for colorectal cancer risk factors;
  • Stratify patient risk into three groups;
  • Offer appropriate screening modalities according to patient risk and patient preference; and
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of each selected screening modality.

In 2006, CRICO/RMF reconvened the Colorectal Cancer Screening Advisory Committee to update and simplify the CRICO/RMF Colorectal Cancer Screening Algorithm that features:

  • Clearer guidelines
  • A patient assessment checklist
  • Analysis of malpractice data
  • Examples related to cases in which the diagnosis of colon cancer was delayed

This new version supplants the 2004 edition you have been using.

For questions about the CRICO/RMF Colorectal Cancer Screening Algorithm, contact Program Director, Loss Prevention & Patient Safety Operations, Ann Louise Puopolo, BSN, RN.

Note: The CRICO/RMF Colorectal Cancer Screening Algorithm is a decision-support tool and should not be construed as a standard of care.
